Low power microscopes have distinct uses. And these distinct uses are what make them essential for different applications. In fact, some applications can only be performed with a low power microscope and not with anything else. This is the reason why some people should prefer using low power microscopes against other options.

Some low power microscopes are digital microscopes. These means that they can be high-end microscopes just like many other microscopes that are available in the market today. The only distinct difference is the magnification power that they are able to provide.

Here are good points why you should use low power microscopes:

1. Low power microscopes are used for viewing slightly bigger objects.

Think of the samples that will be viewed under the microscope. Would you be viewing dry blood samples, tissues, and prepared slides with cells? If so, you won’t need low power microscopes. These samples are best viewed with high power microscopes with advanced features. Low power microscopes are commonly used with samples as big as coins, stamps, insects, watches, and circuit boards - anything smaller than a hair strand won’t be viewed perfectly. The rule of thumb says that if you have to observe something that is normally invisible to the naked eye, go for high power microscopes. Otherwise, low power microscopes would do.

2. Low power microscopes are for beginners.

Unless you are professional or somebody who knows his job well, it is best for you to use a low power microscope. Low power microscopes are considered as entry-level microscopes. This is because they are very easy to use and manipulate. The simple calibration of the lenses, the objectives, and the whole system can be done even by a first time user. High power microscopes, on the other hand, are very different. The 100x objective of these microscopes is an oil immersion objective. This means that prior to using them, a special type of mineral oil have to be applied to it. And only then the objective can accurately magnify a specimen 2000x than its original size. Also, these lenses have to be properly cleaned after use. The wrong application of the mineral oil can damage the lens, thus making the whole device almost useless.

3. Low power microscopes are cheaper.
If you don’t have the use for high power objectives, why not settle for a low power microscope that usually costs lesser than high power microscopes? You are going to save a lot of money in these devices. Don’t buy an expensive high power microscope unless you really need the 1000x magnification level it provides. If you are merely hobbyists and need nothing more than a decent magnification a lot better than a magnifying glass, low power microscope is your best choice.

4. Low power microscopes are easier to use.

It doesn’t take an expert to understand how low power microscopes are used, stored, and taken cared of. Most of the time, you just need to read the manual and you are all set. You can understand the words used in the manual, and that’s a guarantee. It is very much unlike a high power microscope that has manuals containing technical jargons and words only adept individuals could understand. Besides, low power microscopes have minimal knobs and adjustments controls. High power microscopes, on the other hand, have too many of them. And if you don’t know what you are turning, you might just break the expensive device altogether.

5. Low power microscopes have lower repair costs.

If and when the unexpected happen and you broke the microscope, you have two choices. You can ask a repairman to fix it for you. Or you can simply throw it away and buy a new one. Either of these two options is acceptable with low power microscopes. Low power microscopes don’t cost a fortune to repair. For just a few bucks and the lens or the mechanism is repaired. Or if you don’t want it to be repaired at all, just get a replacement. Anyway, some of these microscopes can cost less than a hundred dollars, depending upon its features. These, however are not an option with high power microscopes. High power microscopes may cost hundreds of dollars to repair. This is acceptable really, because each one of these devices may value a thousand dollars in the market.

These are the very reasons why you should use a low power microscope. These reasons are not only feasible. It would also save some of your time, money, and effort, as far as investing in microscopes are concerned.
