When one looks through the catalogues of microscopes, he will surely see that the microscopes are subcategorized into lower power and high power microscopes. Just by looking at the name description, without really understanding its purpose, people would mistakenly say that high power microscopes are way better than low power microscopes. They might also think that low power is more inferior in features when compared to high power microscopes.

But this concept is entirely wrong. Low power microscopes and high power microscope are distinctly different from each other and this is a fact. But it is not safe to assume that the one is always better than the other outright. Low power microscopes have individual uses that high power microscope can’t possibly do. And this is the reason why some people do have the need for low power microscope and can’t use a high power microscope at all.

Low power microscopes are needed by the following people:

1. Watch Repairmen
Watches have very small mechanical parts. It is impossible to repair a watch using merely one’s naked eye. Watch repairmen need to magnify the small parts of the delicate watch they need to repair in order for it to work again. Without a low power microscope, this feat is going to be hard, much less impossible. High power microscopes can’t be used for watch repair. This is because these types of microscopes are only going to magnify the insides of the watch way too much. As a result, the repairman won’t be able to have a full view of the watch’s mechanisms. They would need to move the watch to the left or to the right, just for them to see the full insides of it. And doing this is going to be very inconvenient for them, making them spend more time in the repair process.

2. Circuit board inspection and repair
Circuit board inspectors usually work inside an electronics manufacturing company. Their main job is to check all the circuit boards coming out of the production line and see whether they have passed the quality control check as created by the manufacturers themselves. Again high power microscopes can’t do this job. Because they would magnify the circuit board out of proportion, allowing users to miss some important points entirely. And when repairing circuit boards, full manipulation of the sample is essential. With a high power microscope, the longest working distance it can give its users is 2mm. This is not acceptable, because circuit board repair may require soldering, taking out of parts, and replacing them. And all of these can’t be done with a 2mm working distance. A low power microscope is more preferable - because it is able to provide users with a longer working distance at 100mm. One hundred millimeters should be enough to do some repair on the circuit board.

3. Coin and stamp collectors
Hobbyists who are fond of collecting rare coins and stamps need a microscope once in a while. They need it so that they can inspect the scratches and overstrikes of a particular coin they have. They also need it to look for some mint marks of the stamps. And of course, microscopes are essential if they want to prove the validity and authenticity of the rare coin or stamp they have in their possession. Without a low power microscope, all these are not possible. High power microscope, on the other hand, won’t help much, because these microscopes are built to magnify very small things like microorganisms, cells, and tissues. Observing a coin through a high power microscope is unfeasible.

4. People who love to do nature trips
If you are fond of going to places to explore nature and wildlife, you definitely want a microscope handy. Looking at the anatomy of insects through a low power microscope is very ideal, because again, insects are rather big specimens and high power microscopes can’t possibly work with them. Observing the cross section of a wild plant is also ideal with low power microscopes. You will be able to identify all the distinct parts of either an insect or a plant with low power microscopes more than high power microscopes.

These are the people who would benefit most with using low power microscopes, than they would with high power microscopes. As you can see, high power microscopes have some limitations that only low power microscopes can fulfill. And it is true the other way around. High power microscopes do have features that are lacking in low power microscopes. So when choosing between the two, consider the application you’ll use the microscope for. That’s the only way you can decide which type of microscope is better for you.
